Apple Unveils the iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable
After years of rumours, Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market.
At its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, 2026, Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The book-style phone has a 5.4-inch outer display that opens into a 7.6-inch inner display.
It is one of the biggest changes Apple has made to the iPhone's physical form factor, but the hardware is only half the story. Apple also redesigned parts of iOS to take advantage of the larger inner screen, including side-by-side multitasking.
For Malaysia, pre-orders begin at 8pm on October 16, 2026, with availability starting October 23. The Malaysian lineup starts at RM9,499.
It's Not Called the Ultra
For months, rumours referred to Apple's foldable as the "iPhone Ultra" or "iPhone Fold."
The official name is iPhone Duo.
The name fits the hardware: there are two displays, and Apple designed them around the same aspect ratio so the experience can move between the outer and inner screens without requiring a completely different layout.
The inner display measures 7.6 inches, while the outer display measures 5.4 inches. Both are Super Retina XDR displays with ProMotion and Always-On capability.
The inner display has a resolution of 1878 × 2670 pixels at 430 ppi. The outer display is 1398 × 2034 pixels at 460 ppi. Apple rates both displays for up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Apple says the outer display provides roughly 90 percent of the display area of the iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner display is about 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.
Thin When Open, Thick When Folded
The physical dimensions are worth paying attention to because foldables live or die by how much hardware they can fit into a thin chassis.
When open, the iPhone Duo measures:
164.6 × 117.8 × 5.2 mm
When folded:
117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm
It weighs 254 grams.
Apple uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and a custom hinge designed around the folding display. The hinge contains more than 100 components and is engineered to control the movement of the two halves as the phone opens and closes.
The iPhone Duo also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
The result is a phone that is just 5.2mm thick when open, although the two halves together make it 11.3mm thick when folded.
That trade-off is unavoidable with this kind of design: the large display disappears into the body when you close the phone, but the folded device is necessarily thicker than a conventional slab phone.
A20 Pro: Built for Sustained Performance
The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro, the same generation of chip used in Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
The chip uses a 2nm process and includes:
- a 6-core CPU;
- a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators;
- a Dual 16-core Neural Engine;
- hardware-accelerated ray tracing; and
- 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth than the previous generation.
Apple says the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, while the GPU is up to 40 percent faster. The Dual 16-core Neural Engine provides 2× compute power for on-device AI workloads.
Apple also designed a custom vapor-chamber thermal system around the chip.
According to Apple, the system helps the iPhone Duo sustain performance during demanding workloads and delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.
That matters more on a foldable than a conventional phone.
A thin device can produce impressive peak benchmark numbers, but sustained performance is what matters when the workload involves gaming, long-running computation or repeated on-device AI processing.
Two Displays, Split View on an iPhone at Last
The 7.6-inch display would be much less interesting if iOS simply stretched existing apps across it.
Apple has instead redesigned the software experience around the additional screen space.
Split View lets users run two apps side by side. It can also display two windows from the same app, such as two Safari windows, and users can save app pairings for quick access later.
Conceptually, it looks much closer to a small tablet than a conventional iPhone:
┌───────────────────┬───────────────────┐
│ │ │
│ Safari │ Notes │
│ │ │
│ │ │
└───────────────────┴───────────────────┘
Apple also redesigned elements such as the Home Screen, Dynamic Island and navigation to work with the foldable form factor.
The device can also be used in different folded positions, including hands-free configurations that take advantage of the hinge.
For people who spend a lot of time reading documentation, comparing information or working across multiple apps, this may end up being more important than the raw screen size.
Two 48MP Cameras, Without a Dedicated Telephoto
The iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion Camera System consisting of:
- 48MP Fusion Main;
- 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide; and
- a 12MP Center Stage front camera.
The main camera can provide 2× optical-quality telephoto using its high-resolution sensor.
There is, however, no dedicated telephoto camera.
The main camera uses a fixed ƒ/1.6 aperture, unlike the variable-aperture Fusion Main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple also uses the foldable design for several camera features.
Duo Preview puts a live camera preview on the outer display so people in front of the phone can see the framing.
Smart Take uses on-device intelligence to capture a photo when the system detects that the subjects are ready.
Kid Cue displays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to help attract a child's attention toward the camera.
The main camera supports video recording up to 4K at 120fps with Dolby Vision.
Touch ID Comes Back
One of the more surprising hardware decisions is biometric authentication.
The iPhone Duo does not use Face ID.
Instead, Apple has integrated Touch ID into the side button. The arrangement allows authentication whether the phone is open or folded.
That makes Duo a significant departure from recent flagship iPhones, where Face ID has been the primary biometric system.
For Apple users who preferred Touch ID, this is probably one of the most noticeable changes.
eSIM Only
The iPhone Duo has no physical SIM tray.
Apple's specifications list it as an eSIM-only device, with support for dual eSIM and the ability to store eight or more eSIMs.
For Malaysian users, Apple lists CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and Yes among the operators supporting eSIM features for iPhone.
So the bigger consideration is not whether Malaysian networks support eSIM — they do — but whether your particular plan and activation process meet your requirements.
Battery and Charging
Apple uses a dual-battery architecture to fit the battery system around the foldable design.
Its official specifications list:
- up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display;
- up to 31 hours using the inner display;
- up to 37 hours of streamed video with the outer display; and
- up to 26 hours of streamed video with the inner display.
Apple also lists up to 24 hours of typical video playback under its standard usage measurement.
Wired charging can reach 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a 60W or higher adapter.
MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging support up to 25W.
Apple Pencil Comes to the iPhone
The iPhone Duo is also the first iPhone to support the USB-C Apple Pencil.
The feature is not available immediately at launch. Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming later this year, with compatibility across both displays.
For people who already use an iPad for notes, markup or sketches, this could make the large inner screen considerably more useful.
It also gives Apple another way to position Duo as something between a traditional phone and a small tablet.
Malaysia Pricing and Availability
The Malaysian pricing is straightforward:
| Storage | Price |
|---|---|
| 256GB | RM9,499 |
| 512GB | RM10,499 |
| 1TB | RM12,499 |
| 2TB | RM15,499 |
Pre-orders open at 8pm MYT on October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23, 2026.
The iPhone Duo is available in:
- Star White
- Night Sky
Apple also sells dedicated Duo cases and a Folio with Kickstand in Malaysia.
The US starting price is $1,999 for 256GB.
A simple currency conversion can make the Malaysian price look higher than the US price, but that is not a particularly useful measure of Apple's regional pricing on its own. Taxes, local pricing structures and currency assumptions all affect the comparison.
Is It Worth the Premium?
This section is analysis rather than an Apple specification.
At RM9,499, the iPhone Duo is clearly positioned as a premium device.
What you are paying for is not simply a bigger display.
You are paying for the foldable form factor, the 7.6-inch inner screen, Split View, A20 Pro, the dual-battery design, Touch ID, the 48MP camera system and eventual Apple Pencil support.
There are compromises too.
At 254 grams, Duo is not a lightweight phone. It is also 11.3mm thick when folded, has no dedicated telephoto camera and does not get Apple Pencil support immediately at launch.
For someone who mostly wants a conventional phone with a strong camera, those trade-offs may not make much sense.
For someone who spends a lot of time reading documents, monitoring dashboards, researching, working across multiple apps or using on-device AI, the larger inner display could be considerably more useful.
The question is therefore less about whether foldables are inherently worth the money and more about whether you will actually use the additional screen.
If you will, Duo starts to make more sense.
If you will not, RM9,499 is a very large premium for a form factor you may rarely open.
Apple's First Foldable Changes the Question
The iPhone Duo is not a minor experiment.
Apple has entered the foldable market with a 7.6-inch inner display, A20 Pro, a dual-battery architecture, 48MP cameras, redesigned iOS multitasking and a Malaysian starting price of RM9,499.
The question is no longer whether Apple will make a foldable iPhone.
It already has.
The more interesting question is whether Apple's approach — expensive, tightly integrated and built around its existing ecosystem — is enough to make foldables a mainstream part of the iPhone lineup.
That is something the market will have to answer.
